About UMF and MGO

Unique Mānuka Factor (UMF) is a quality trademark and grading system developed by the Unique Manuka Factor Honey Association (UMFHA). It is a guarantee that you're getting genuine, high-quality Mānuka Honey from New Zealand. It is an assurance of quality, potency and authenticity.

The grading system measures the concentration of specific compounds, including Methylglyoxal (MGO) and Leptosperin, which are unique to Manuka Honey. These compounds are responsible for the honey's renowned antibacterial and health-promoting properties. The higher the UMF rating, the greater the concentration of these beneficial compounds. Whether you're looking to boost your immune system, improve digestion, or even treat skin conditions, UMF-graded Manuka Honey offers a range of advantages that go beyond its delicious taste.

What is UMF?

The Unique Mānuka Factor (UMF) rating is then used to represent the honey’s overall quality. This number (ranging from UMF 5+ to 30+) reflects the combined levels of these four key components in the honey.

While MGO is just one part of the UMF equation, it tends to increase in proportion to the UMF rating. Simply put, the higher the UMF, the higher the MGO content, and the greater the honey’s potency.

For example:

  • UMF 5+ contains around 85mg of MGO per kilogram.
  • UMF 25+ (our premium grade) boasts an incredible 1200mg of MGO per kilogram!

Which UMF Potency is right for me?

Think about how you plan to use the honey. If you're going to incorporate it into your cooking or add it to beverages, a lower UMF grade is sufficient. Try our BOOST UMF 6+ Mānuka Honey.

However, if you're looking for a strong health supplement or a natural remedy for a specific condition, you need to opt for a higher UMF grade like our ELEVATE UMF 25+ Mānuka Honey. This is why Higher UMF grades come with a higher price tag. It's about finding the right balance between what you're willing to spend and the benefits you're looking to gain.

While Manuka Honey offers numerous health benefits, it's not a substitute for professional medical advice. Always consult with a healthcare provider for the diagnosis and treatment of medical conditions.
How to Authenticate

In a market flooded with imitations, you want to ensure that you're getting honey that's packed with all the health benefits you're after.

Always look for the UMF trademark on the label. This confirms that the honey has been tested and certified by the Unique Manuka Factor Honey Association (UMFHA). The UMF number should also be prominently displayed, indicating the grade and potency (strength) of the Manuka Honey.

The "Packed in New Zealand" statement or the inclusion of the Fernmark logo shows the honey has been produced, packed, and labeled in New Zealand. The unique properties of this honey are closely tied to the country's specific environmental conditions.

Additionally, each jar of UMF Manuka Honey comes with a batch number. You can use this to trace the honey back to its source. Don't hesitate to reach out to us if you have any doubts or questions. We’ll be happy to provide you with all the information you need to verify the authenticity of your product.
